Need For Speed developer happy to have competition

There's a host of racing games coming to consoles, but the developer behind Need For Speed: Rivals is pleased to have more driving games on the market

There's a host of racing games coming to next generation consoles, including Microsoft's Forza 5, SONY's DriveClub and Ubisoft's The Crew, but the developer behind Need For Speed: Rivals is pleased to have more driving games on the market.

"I think it's so great that there are other games coming," Marcus Nilsson, executive producer at Ghost Games, told Polygon. "The more games we get into this genre of action racing, the better. Because then we're going to need to innovate. You've got The Crew as well, and we're all going to be pushing innovation forward.

"We're certainly doing our part in that deal of trying to get a new experience onto the consoles for the next generation. It's just a new way of playing and I think that's what you really need from games when we have a transition."

Nilsson also reassured fans that although the series now sits under the EA Sports brand, it's not about to become an annual franchise and it's a very different animal to the more serious racing sims out there. "It doesn't mean that Need For Speed becomes a sports game, because it is not," he insists. "It's a cops and robbers action game more than anything else. The positioning of this game is esoteric, it's an action game - it's not really competing with Forza and Gran Turismo."

Need For Speed: Rivals launches for Xbox 360, Xbox One and PlayStation 3 on November 22nd. The PlayStation 4 edition follows on the 29th.
