Iconic Black Gaming Characters

The gaming industry is lacking in black representation. It’s got better over the years, but there is still a long way to go. The gaming industry is one of the biggest leaders for creative content, but BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) representation must get better. For Black History Month, we want to celebrate the top iconic black gaming characters.

Miles Morales – Marvel’s Spider-Man

In the first Marvel’s Spider-Man game, Miles Morales was a playable character. In the comic books, Peter Parker and Miles Morales never appeared together. For many, Miles became the hero that they didn’t know they needed. In the new game Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, he takes the spotlight in his path and is ready to become his own Spider-Man.

Bayek – Assassin’s Creed Origins

Bayek of Siwa was praised for how he was a very relatable character. He is the main protagonist in Assassin’s Creed Origins and takes his role as Medjay very seriously. The huge narrative isn’t one to be completed in one session, but the character development of both Bayek and Aya made them some of the best protagonists out of the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

David Anderson - Mass Effect

David Anderson, or should we say Captain David Anderson is one of Mass Effect’s most decorated special forces operatives in the Alliance and an honoured human war hero. His tactical mind, bravery and exceptional leadership skills gained Anderson an excellent reputation within the Mass Effect series.

Lee Everett – The Walking Dead

Lee from Telltale Games’ the Walking Dead has been praised as one of the best black video game characters. The game is known for giving the players the choice of they experience the apocalypse through Lee, and that he comes across as just a natural character trying survive Both Lee and Clementine set the bar for entertainment with such incredible character development. Racial tensions within the US come up within the plot, but the game isn’t about race.

Augustus Cole - Gears of War

Private Augustus “Cole Train” Cole is a gritty and hard-hitting character within the Gears of War franchise. His bulk and skill have served him well in the many battlefields he has faced, but his character is so much more than his tough exterior shows. Arguably his best attributes are his manners, respect, selflessness, and humility. He has rejected every military promotion he has been offered and remains to be one of the most reliable and honourable characters in gaming.

Marcus – Watch Dogs 2

When we think about legendary black gaming characters, often many fit into a stereotypical mould. Watch Dogs 2 who a Black character should be introduces us to Mark Holloway who dismantles the status quo. He is a computer hacker who joins DedSec in Francisco to take down the city’s surveillance system – ctOS. His enthusiasm for tech, his sense of style and his emotions make him so relatable. Ubisoft created a character that is so far from the stereotypes, setting the standards for challenging Black representation within video games.

Barret Wallace - Final Fantasy

When we think of passionate and complex characters, you cannot look past Final Fantasy’s Barret Wallace. His good heart and caring nature are mirrored with brute strength and brash attitude. Each of these traits makes for a perfect mix when fighting for the planet, and of course for the apple of his eye, his daughter Marlene.

Bangalore – Apex Legends

Apex Legends has a very diverse cast of playable characters, which is immediately refreshing to see upon loading the game up. There are men and women of difference races, body shapes – including two black women. It’s extremely refreshing to see diversity there without the need or circumstance around it.

Mickey and Lou - Far Cry New Dawn

Far Cry New Dawn’s infamous twins and leaders of the Highwaymen are Mickey and Lou. They are strong and ruthless leaders who you don’t want to mess with. Lou is the bloodthirsty muscle and Mickey is the calm, calculated brains of this iconic duo. The pair are both predictable and unpredictable, cool, and callous. Mickey and Lou are two very strong black women and key people in Far Cry New Dawn.

Grace Walker – Wolfenstein

Grace Walker is a strong African American woman who captures our attention whenever she is in a scene. In the game she is the leader of the American Resistance and former leader of the Black Revolutionary Front. She is known for being one of the most charismatic and bad-ass characters for representing black women.
