Best 2 Player Games for Your Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch is a great console to play together. It has flexible Joy-Con controllers that allow two people to play at the same time and a large catalogue of games that allow two or more players to team up and share the gaming fun.

We’ve pulled together some of the best games for 2-player action on the Nintendo Switch. Some of these games require you to work together as a team, and others you can go head-to-head and compete against each other.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

This game features a fantastic cast of characters from Nintendo's Super Mario and Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series. Like previous Mario & Sonic titles, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is a sports game with a host of events and minigames that are easy to pick up and play.

What we love about this game is the variety of events you can take part in including: the 100m dash, skateboarding, karate, football, swimming, gymnastics, fencing and table tennis. All of these are perfect for going head-to-head against another player to see who will emerge victorious.

As all the games are simple to pick up and have adjustable difficulty levels, you don’t have to be an avid gamer to play so it’s ideal for family and friends to take part. It is a PEGI 7 rating, so children can get involved in the fun too.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

You can’t beat Mario Kart 8 Deluxe when it comes to fabulously fun racing games. There are lots of characters to choose from, a multitude of vehicle combinations, and quirky tracks to zoom round.

In the 2-player option you have three types of gameplay:

  • Grand Prix – twelve racers compete for first place in cups. The tracks have a lot of variety, from ones made up of cakes and sweets, to ghostly mansions with gravity defying paths. To help you win, you can pick items up along the way that you can use to gain position against your fellow racers, like throwing a banana skin to make them slip up.
  • VS – is similar to Grand Prix mode, but you can customise it by choosing difficulty level, track type and items that appear.
  • Battle mode – for this option you have to battle your opponents in a track-based arena to make them lose the balloons. Every time you get your opponent with a bomb, a fireball or even a shell they’ll lose a balloon.

Mario Kart is suitable for all ages as it is a PEGI 3 rating and no matter what experience level players are this game will keep everyone engaged. It’s hard to go wrong on a race when you select the easy settings, as the cars practically drive themselves. For players that fall behind, they are rewarded with different items such as speed enhancing powers to help them catch back up. But if you’re an experienced gamer, then ramp up the engine size and the game is a lot harder to handle and a great challenge!

You can even buy a couple of Joy-Con steering wheel attachments to make racing each other even more realistic.

Luigi’s Mansion 3

Luigi’s Mansion 3 recently won the Animation category at the gaming BAFTAs and there’s no surprise why with its gorgeous graphics and great characters.

The two-player mode on this title is a little bit different to other games we’ve listed, as you don’t have it straight out the box, you have to earn it! To play the game together you need to unlock the second character called Gooigi, who looks like Luigi but is made entirely of green goo, by completing your first set of objectives. The first set of objectives is fairly easy to complete and then you can play the rest of the game in co-op with one of you as Luigi and one as Gooigi.

If you want to play with a second player that’s not in the same house as you, you can use the popular Scarescraper mode, which supports up to 8 players. You’ll have to race the timer to defeat ghosts, find objects and complete other challenges together.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

You’re in for a treat if you’ve never played Super Smash Bros Ultimate before. It’s a really fun fighting game, where players must try to smash each other off the side of the arena.

Using the game with 2-players, you can team up together or battle separately against your opponents. The battles take place in a real variety of worlds, with the choice of over 100 stages to play on. For those of you that like music to set the mood of the battle, you can pick your favourite tunes from over 800 tracks for all the battle stages.

You also have the choice of over 70 fighters in the base game, with new ones being added frequently. You can play characters like Mario, Pikachu, and Pac-Man, or even tough-guy Snake from Metal Gear Solid.

Depending on the character you choose, you have an array of attack moves and you can also collect items to help you win. This game will keep you on your toes too, as there are plenty of surprise hazards, including stages that change shape and characters that suddenly appear!
