GoldenEye 007 Reloaded Developer Interview

GoldenEye 64, released in 1997 on the Nintendo 64, defined multiplayer gaming for a generation. Now fans of the game can play the much-awaited remake, GoldenEye 007 Reloaded, on Xbox 360 and PS3!

In the run up to the launch of GoldenEye 007 Reloaded, we were lucky enough to get the opportunity to ask the development team at Eurocom some questions from our followers on Twitter @gamedigital.

Here what they said . . .

How does this iteration compare to one of my faves of all time, Golden Eye on N64? (@DanWain666)

The approach we took when developing GoldenEye 007 / GoldenEye 007: Reloaded was to re-imagine the original story from the film GoldenEye, this is why we have a new cast, go to some different locations and feature a mildly updated storyline to make the story feel a little more contemporary. It was never our intention or desire to create a level by level re-make of the original game.

That said, we do pay subtle homage to the original game in a number of places as everyone at Eurocom is a huge fan of that game and have many great memories of it.

Why did you change the main character to Daniel Craig? (@TCTav)

There is only ever one James Bond, and at the moment, that is Daniel Craig, so by default Daniel plays Bond in GoldenEye 007: Reloaded. Everyone at Eurocom is a huge fan of Craig's Bond.

Any chance of having the Brosnan skin back or even DLC of all the Bonds? (@TheFifthDoctor)

That sounds like it could be a great idea, but unfortunately, at this moment in time we do not have any plans to feature anyone other than Daniel Craig in the role of James Bond. On the plus side, GoldenEye 007: Reloaded features a number of new classic characters, some of which also have their own signature weapons and special perks.

Is Goldeneye built from the ground up for PS3/360 or is this a spruced and juiced Wii port? (@tom1991wells)

Eurocom developed a brand new engine to support GoldenEye 007: Reloaded on the PS3 / Xbox 360 that allows us to run the game at a smooth 60 frames per second in high definition. The levels, characters and props were also extensively overhauled to give them a greater level of detail, and in many cases, were completely re-built from scratch.

In addition to the technology and assets, there is also a lot of great new content in the game; the new single player MI-6 Ops game mode, new weapons, maps, classic characters and game modes for multiplayer and a host of achievements and trophies spread across the entire game.

Are there any new maps compared to the Wii version of Reloaded? (@lfcme)

There are a number of new maps for GoldenEye Reloaded, we also re-built and expanded some of the maps from the Wii version of the game, to give them a greater graphical fidelity and also so that they can accommodate 16 players.

Do you feel any extra pressure when updating a hugely popular title? (@cKyJack)

The original GoldenEye has left such a fantastic legacy for console FPS games so we've always tried to be respectful of that. The pressure and expectation was considerable, but of the flipside, that has compelled us to raise our game (no pun intended) to make the best Bond game that we possibly can.

Are game types rebalanced from the Wii version? Heroes being optional was a problem in MP. (@lfcme lfcme)

To answer that specific point, yes we have tweaked that game mode to remove the exploit of declining to be a Hero. There have been numerous other tweaks to the MP game modes too.

Was it an enjoyable experience recreating a classic for high definition systems? (@theColster123)

Working on a Bond game is always a fantastic experience, we're huge Bond fans at Eurocom and GoldenEye 007: Reloaded is our fifth James Bond game. During the development of the title we got to work with many talented people associated with the Bond films, including the actors Daniel Craig, Judy Dench and Rory Kinnear, Bruce Feirstein, the writer of the original GoldenEye film and also a number of people at EON Productions, the producers of the Bond films.

Finally, can you tell our readers why they should go out and pick up Goldeneye?

Put simply, GoldenEye 007: Reloaded is a great package all round, we have an epic story campaign, 16 player online multiplayer action with a large of game modes, 4 player split screen and of course the brand new MI-6 Ops game mode. The game looks great, feels authentic and is jam packed with a wealth of content unique to the world of James Bond.

Thank you!
