World of Warcraft userbase hits 12 million

Massively-multiplayer role-playing phenomenon World of Warcraft has cemented its position as one of the most popular games ever after hitting 12 million subscribers worldwide.

Blizzard Entertainment's smash-hit MMORPG has achieved the unprecedented milestone in six years, during which it has consistently been one of the world's bestselling PC games.

The title is now the most popular subscriber-based MMO of all time and has been translated into eight languages, winning fans across Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Such has been the impact of the game that Hollywood studio Legendary Pictures is currently working on a World of Warcraft movie, with Spider-Man filmmaker Sam Raimi signed up to direct.

However, the gaming franchise is showing no signs of running out of steam yet, with new expansion World of Warcraft: Cataclysm due out this December.

Mike Morhaime, co-founder of Blizzard, said: "We are as committed as ever to taking the game to new heights and we look forward to demonstrating that with Cataclysm."
