Mario Kart Wii performs well in Europe

Mario Kart Wii topped the video game charts in both Germany and Spain last week, reports.

In Germany the Nintendo racing game was followed by Assassin's Creed: Directors Cut Edition, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, and Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How old is your Brain?.

Meanwhile, other charters in Spain were Wii Play, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, and God of War: Chains of Olympus.

The game also topped the All Formats chart in the UK on its launch, Chart Track reported.

In fact, the game recorded the eighth largest opening week sales total in the UK ever, with the numbers exceeding all five of the other Mario Wii games combined (Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Strikers, Mario Party 8 and Super Paper Mario).

The Mario Kart franchise has proved very popular on previous Nintendo games consoles.
