Super Mario Galaxy 2 tops critics' chart for 2010

Super Mario Galaxy 2 has been revealed as the best-reviewed game of the year so far in a new report from review score aggregator website Metacritic.

Videogame legend Mario's latest Wii adventure, which hit UK stores last month, has received an unbeatable average rating of 98 out of 100 based on 76 different reviews, putting it in the "universal acclaim" category.

In second place in the annual rankings so far was the Xbox 360 and PC title Mass Effect 2, which impressed critics enough to award it an average score of 96 when it launched in January.

The sci-fi adventure, which follows the galaxy-spanning adventures of interstellar hero Commander Shepard, won high praise for its robust shooter gameplay and branching morality-influenced storyline.

Third place, meanwhile, went to Red Dead Redemption, the Western-themed title which has proven one of the year's biggest hits, with the game scoring an average of 95.

Metacritic's report also showed that the first half of 2010 has seen an even more impressive crop of titles than in the corresponding period of last year, with seven games achieving Metascores of more than 90, compared to three in 2009.
