New Mortal Kombat promises 'immersive' 3D

Mortal Kombat fans have been told to expect one of the most involving fighting games around from the series' new instalment - thanks to the addition of 3D functionality.

Ed Boon, head of the new game's development team at NetherRealms Studios, told Eurogamer that it has been working for months to add 3D to the bloody brawler, saying it looks "really impressive".

Mr Boon, who helped to create the franchise back in the 1990s, described the three-dimensional visuals as "immersive", expressing confidence that the feature will help to draw players into the brutal action.

He explained: "With our fighting we have a lot more of a 2D fighting field, but the 3D visuals really complement that a lot."

Mortal Kombat will launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next year and is set to introduce a host of new features, including a cooperative arcade mode and an in-depth time-travelling story.

It will also ramp up the series' famous violence, with some of the most grisly Fatality finishing moves yet seen.
