Batman: Arkham Asylum ships 2.5 million copies

Publisher Activision has announced that it has now shipped 2.5 million copies of its comic book action title Batman: Arkham Asylum for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

The figures demonstrate the extent to which Batfans have gone wild for the Dark Knight's new adventure, which sees the hero taking on a number of his most famous foes in the iconic mental institution.

It has also been met with a rapturous reception among reviewers, with Guinness World Records having acknowledged the title as the most critically acclaimed superhero game ever on the back of gushing write-ups.

Phil Rogers, chief executive officer of Eidos, stated that the reception showed that Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of the best games of 2009.

He said: "I've been following the great reviews and consumer blogs and I'm delighted that gamers everywhere love playing this game as much as we do."

Owners of the game were also treated to the release of free downloadable content for the title last week, with the DLC package adding to two new Challenge Maps for players to tackle.
