Dark Souls director ponders virtual reality

Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the First Sin

The gloomy oppressive world of Dark Souls would be a good fit for virtual reality, according to Dark Souls 2 director Yui Tanimura.

The game designer admitted as much when IGN asked him whether From Software was among the studios working on developing VR games. “This isn't something that we are looking into detail yet, or at least right now, said Tanimura, “but I agree that the world of Dark Souls 2 is something that has a very visceral element to it. It’s mostly sort of on the realistic side, so I think that experience with the headset is something that would go well with Dark Souls as content.”

For now, it seems that all his creative energy is directed towards the upcoming version of Dark Souls 2 being developed for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin brings together the full game, plus all of its DLC expansions, more enemies and more multiplayer features. It will also be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

“Going forward in terms of future games in the series, there are definitely more possibilities in terms of new enemies that take advantage of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One,” Tanimura added. “I’m sure its not a secret there are all kinds of possibilities for the future, especially with this new hardware and much expertise going forward. There are some planning documents that we have internally that would blow your head off.”

Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin is due on 7 April 2015.
