Halo 5 beta gives 343 a year to incorporate fan feedback

343 Industries, the dedicated Halo studio that picked up the massive Xbox franchise from creator Bungie, has been speaking about the benefits of having a Halo 5 beta almost a full year ahead of the game's actual release.

“We're doing something somewhat unique here - we're releasing a beta quite literally a full year before this thing comes out,” executive producer Dan Ayoub told CVG. “It's really meant to give a sneak peek to people.”

“Doing something a year in advance gives us the opportunity to be a lot more reactive,” he continued. “If we put this thing out two months before launch, we aren't going to be able to change or tweak anything. We're going to get a lot of player data coming off of this, we're going to hear what people like and don't like, and we're going to have a year to respond to that.”

For Ayoub, it's a shift in the way games are made that can only benefit players and studios alike. “I've been in the industry for 16 years - you didn't have the ability to have a dialogue with your players the way we do now until very recently,” he said. “A lot of our other efforts reflect that. You look at the Halo Channel, you look at Waypoint - these are ways for us to engage with our players in a very meaningful way.”

The Halo 5 beta kicks off on 29 December, so you won't have to worry about what to do on New Year's Eve. To be a part of it, you just need to buy the Master Chief Collection boxset for Xbox One. It contains the first four Master Chief games, remade for the new console, plus over 100 multiplayer maps. You'll also get access to the Halo: Nightfall live action TV show, produced by Ridley Scott.
