Review Roundup: Sunset Overdrive

Sunset Overdrive for Xbox One at GAME

The Xbox One gets a big and bold exclusive this week, in the shape of Insomniac Games' Sunset Overdrive. The game is set in a futuristic city where a new energy drink is changing the population into goo-dripping mutants. You have to use your arsenal of wild weaponry and the ability to leap and grind to stay ahead of the monsters and save the day.

“An immensely rewarding experience that has a look and style all its own and a great gameplay package to complement it” is how Game Informer describes the result in a 9.25 review. “It’s a colourful return to form for Insomniac games, and a hell of an exclusive for Xbox One

Polygon is also impressed, chalking up a 9/10 score and praising the game for the way it combines ideas from previous Insomniac titles such as Resistance and Ratchet and Clank. “As a collection of mechanics and ideas, Sunset Overdrive is an impressive evolution of things Insomniac has been doing for a long time,” says the review. “But the best thing about Sunset Overdrive is how it's unabashedly enthusiastic about what it is, in just about every way. That enthusiasm, and the freedom behind it, is contagious.”

“Wonderfully lurid and heartfelt” is Eurogamer's conclusion, attached to an 8/10 score. “An incredibly fun, vibrant game that's a nice break from the overly gritty tone we see far too often in today's market” says Destructoid's 8.5 review, while Games Radar offers a four star rating and calls it “an exciting, self-confident thrill ride”.

Sunset Overdrive is out for Xbox One on Friday 31st October.
