Good news for fans of a certain galaxy far, far away. From now on, all Star Wars games will be part of the official Star Wars timeline, and not considered part of the expanded universe.
The expanded universe, or EU, was established so that George Lucas could allow other people and companies to tell Star Wars stories in novels, cartoons and games, while keeping the core official Star Wars storyline restricted to his movies. Anything that happened in the EU was always unofficial as far as Star Wars lore went, and when Lucas sold the brand to Disney, the decision was made to wipe the EU continuity clean. All the events from those stories no longer happened.
Now, with Episode VII on the horizon, Lucasfilm's new president, Kathleen Kennedy, has announced that all future Star Wars spin-offs will be part of the official canon including upcoming Star Wars video games.
We have an unprecedented slate of new Star Wars entertainment on the horizon, Kennedy said in a blog post on the Star Wars website. Were set to bring Star Wars back to the big screen, and continue the adventure through games, books, comics, and new formats that are just emerging. This future of interconnected storytelling will allow fans to explore this galaxy in deeper ways than ever before.
This includes the new animated TV show, Star Wars Rebels, and multiplayer game Star Wars Battlefront, in development at DICE and set for release in spring 2015.
