Master Chief plays an “integral” role in Halo 5, says Microsoft

Halo Master Chief Collection

There was an almighty kerfuffle on the internet this week, after an interview with actor Mike Colter from X-ONE magazine was posted on Reddit. Colter plays the mysterious character of Agent Locke in the upcoming Halo: Nightfall live action series, and will reprise the role in Halo 5.

“I'm a playable character in Halo 5,” he said in the interview. “Once Halo: The Master Chief Collection is released, and then Halo 5 comes out shortly thereafter, you're basically going to be playing a game with me as the primary character.”

It's the last part that got fans in a lather, as it suggested that Master Chief – the series' iconic hero who had only just returned in Halo 4 after sitting out Halo ODST and Halo Reach – wouldn't be the star of his own game.

Eurogamer then reached out to Microsoft, which responded with the following clarification: “As we've said before, Locke plays a primary role in Halo 5: Guardians. The Master Chief remains an integral part of the game's story and as a playable character.”

What does it all mean? We'll have to wait until late in 2015 for Halo 5: Guardians for the answer to that question. In the meantime, we can catch up on Master Chief's original adventures in the generous Master Chief Collection, which compiles the first three Halo games, remastered for Xbox One, with all their bonus maps and DLC included.
