Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

The award-winning and critically acclaimed reboot of Lara Croft's seminal adventures, Tomb Raider, is coming to next gen consoles early next year, publisher Square Enix has confirmed.

The game, originally released in March 2013, rewinds the iconic character to her early twenties and details her first ever adventure, surviving a shipwreck on a remote island populated by bandits and ancient supernatural power. The game was praised not only for its slick openworld gameplay, but for the way it took the character of Lara and gave her real depth and emotion.

For PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the game will be available as a Definitive Edition, which includes a whole rucksack full of additional content. There's the bonus area, The Tomb of the Lost Adventurer, which was previously exclusive to pre-orders on previous generation platforms. You'll also get eight extra maps, six weapons and four characters for the game's multiplayer modes. Topping it off are six extra Lara costumes.

Also on the disc are digital copies of the Dark Horse tie-in comic book Tomb Raider: The Beginning, The Art of Survival art book and all episodes of the The Final Hours of Tomb Raider online documentary series.

Technical enhancements include a general next gen visual polish, including the advanced hair physics introduced for high end PC versions. Lara herself has been subtly remodelled to more closely resemble Camilla Luddington, the actress who both provided the voice and motion capture for Lara's younger makeover. In terms of platform specifics, Kinect voice controls for weapon modding and menus is available on Xbox One, while the PS4 makes your controller light up when using the torch. Hey, why not?

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will be out in the UK for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 31st.
