Lara Croft will return on next gen consoles

You can't keep a good icon down, and after this year's critically acclaimed reboot Lara Croft will once again plunge into danger in a new Tomb Raider game, currently in development for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The news was confirmed by Phil Rogers, the boss of publisher Square Enix's western operations. In an open letter to gamers and industry alike, Rogers said he was "excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation Tomb Raider sequel."

Square's Head of Studios Darrell Gallagher followed up with a post on the official Tomb Raider blog. "We're very excited to confirm that the team has started working on telling the next chapter in Lara's tale," said. "It's still early days, so I'm afraid I can't provide any further details for now save my assurance that we're not resting on our laurels and acclaim from Tomb Raider's recent successes, but working hard to raise the bar even higher and re-affirm the faith you've shown."

The 2013 Tomb Raider ditched the chronology of the original series, which began in 1996, and started over with a younger, inexperienced Lara enduring a trial by fire when shipwrecked on an island populated by fiendish bandits and haunted by demons.

Marti Noxon, producer and occasional writer of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, was recently confirmed as the scriptwriter on a new Tomb Raider movie, which will take its lead from the rebooted game. Could the new sequel tie in with the film? We'll have to wait and see.
