Far Cry 4: More info 'soon' promises Ubisoft

Although it's not been formally announced, the development of Far Cry 4 is such a no-brainer that even Ubisoft's top executives aren't bothering to hide it.

"We're totally psyched from [Far Cry 3]," senior vice president of marketing and sales Tony Key told Gamespot this week. "It's a great brand, and now it's got the recognition it deserves, so we're clearly going to make another one: more on that soon."

Where would a fourth Far Cry game take place? The series has so far changed location and characters for each main sequel, with Far Cry 2 spinning a tale of mercenaries in Africa and the brilliant Far Cry 3 casting players as tourist Jason Brody, forced to fight for his life against crazed pirates on a tropical island.

And that's not even counting the bonkers downloadable spin-off, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. That was set in the future, but with a retro 1980s vibe, and let players slip into the boots of cyber commando Rex "Power" Colt. It also had giant neon dragons that shot lasers from their eyes, so you know realism was off the menu.

One thing is for sure: Far Cry 4 will keep the free-roaming gameplay and won't be funnelling players down scripted corridors. "I think open world can represent the future of gaming," Key told Gamespot. "That's where we're investing huge portions of our resources--because we believe that that is what consumers want. They don't want linear; they want open."

Far Cry 3 is out now for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
