Ambitious kids game Disney Infinity announced

Disney has finally unveiled its long-rumoured interactive toy/game crossover project, and it's incredibly ambitious. Disney Infinity takes its cue from Activision's enormously popular Skylanders, but takes the concept of playable toys even further.

Unlike Skylanders, where every toy appears in the same game, in Disney Infinity each toy unlocks its own virtual "playset", depending on the movie it comes from. The Starter Pack will contain Sulley from Monsters Inc (and new prequel Monsters University), Captain Jack Sparrow and Mr. Incredible, but there will be at least twenty other characters to choose from at launch.

Play as Mr Incredible and you unlock a free-roaming beat-em-up. Players with other Incredibles figures will be able to join you. Jack Sparrow, meanwhile, opens up a sea-faring exploration game with tropical islands. Sulley and others Monsters Inc characters will place players in a college rivalry where you must play pranks on the other monsters. Each game contains lots of customisable options. You'll be able to create and enhance your own galleon in the Pirates of the Caribbean game, for example.

Characters from different movies will only be able to crossover in the Toybox Mode, a creative suite where players will be able to put together their own games or just build things for fun. Just like LittleBigPlanet, you'll be able to share your Toybox online as well as visit and rate others.

Disney Infinity is being developed by Avalanche Software, the studio behind the rather wonderful Toy Story 3 game. It'll be out in June for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Wii, and 3DS.
