Portal Masters (and parents) welcome to the gifting guide for Skylanders Imaginators. The next instalment of the franchise brings fans the power to create their own Skylander, with endless combinations of powers, abilities, catchphrases and looks.

Which starter pack do you buy, I hear you cry- don't panic as we have you covered!

What are Skylanders?

Skylanders is part of the Toys to Life category of gaming. This includes the likes of Disney Infinity, Amiibo and Lego Dimensions. You buy a starter pack that includes the video game, figures and a form of base that the figures stand on. Once you place the character on the base, as if by magic the figures come to life on the screen. Skylanders includes the most well-known character Spyro the Dragon, and has now become one of the most popular family games on the market. There are more than 300+ characters in Skylanders series, each with their own personality so it is no wonder that kids love collecting them.

What is new in Skylanders Imaginators?

Skylanders Imaginators is letting players create their own character. Since the launch, many fans have dreamed up their own Skylander. Now it is possible with Skylanders Imaginators for the first time. There is also an all new adventure complete with storyline, puzzles, battles, heroes and villains. Let's not forget that Crash Bandicoot (another well-loved video game character) is joining the Skylanders in his own edition of Skylanders Imaginators. We are big fans of Crash here and cannot wait to see what craziness he will bring to the franchise.

Also for the first time in the Skylanders series, Kaos (the bad guy causing all the trouble for the Skylanders) is going to be a playable character.

We already have some Skylanders- can we use our previous figures?

Of course! Skylanders Imaginators supports the 300+ toys from all the previous games so you don't have to worry about not being able to use a favourite character. The game supports figures from Skylanders Superchargers, Trap Team, SWAP Force, Giants and Spyro's Adventure- I certainly have my favourites! There is also a new series of figures for Skylanders Imaginators called the Senseis, as well as some former villians that fans may recognise. Each will have their own Battle Class for players to master in-game.

Also there is local co-op mode so two players can play side by side with their favourite Skylander or own creation. Remember the base (or portal as it is known in Skylanders) that you put the figures on to make them come to life? You will be able to use that as well in Skylanders Imaginators!

What is the difference between the Skylanders Imaginators Starter Packs?

Glad you asked. It can be difficult looking for the perfect Starter Pack, especially if it's a Christmas present. There are three different starter packs to choose from, so here is a quick run down of what is in each pack.

Storage

When collecting all these figures, you'll certainly need somewhere safe to store them until the new adventure. Also if you like taking your Skylanders to a friend's house, there are Skylanders travel cases to keep them secure whilst on the go. These can also be used for storage.
