Gears of War 3 set for worldwide release in September

Xbox EU community manager Graeme Boyd – or AceyBongos, as most gamers know him – has confirmed via Twitter that Marcus Fenix and co. are gearing up for their third (and possibly final) battle against the Locust hordes this coming September.

Gears of War 3 will hit most territories on September 20th, with Japan getting the game just 48 hours later, on the 22nd. The game had previously been pencilled in for a vague 'Fall 2011' launch after slipping from its originally planned release this April.

Microsoft also announced some details of the game's multiplayer component, confirming five new maps - Trenches, Mercy, Checkout, Overpass and Thrashball. Players will be able to get their hands on a number of brand new weapons, including a retro take on the popular Lancer, a sawed-off shotgun, incendiary grenades and the burrowing Digger Launcher. Upping the gore quota are the new execution moves, special finishers for each individual weapon.

Anyone purchasing the Epic Edition of Bulletstorm this Friday on Xbox 360 will get exclusive access to the Gears 3 multiplayer beta, to help tide impatient players over until September. Series creator Cliff Bleszinski has promised dedicated servers to remove host advantage and create a "level playing field" in the competitive arena.
