Will Saints Row IV come to next gen consoles?

It's all steam ahead for the August launch of sanity-deprived openworld romp Saints Row IV, but if you were thinking of waiting to see whether the game popped up on PlayStation 4 or the next Xbox before making a purchase, you might be in for a wait.

Speaking to VG247, design director Scott Phillips explained that while developer Volition would like to have made the game for the new consoles, it wasn't about to pin its hopes on machines that still don't have a confirmed release date.

"To be honest, we didn’t have much of the consoles for a long time and our target date was always where it is now, in August," Phillips says. "Either SONY or Microsoft have put any dates on their stuff so we don’t like to work on platforms that we’re not sure are even going to be out."

Will the games be ported over later? Phillips isn't saying. "It could come out on that eventually," he added, "but that’s not our plan right now".

In a twist that is wonderfully silly even for a series that has always been tongue in cheek, Saints Row IV sees the criminal Third Street Saints gang elected to the White House, just before an alien invasion. Expect sci-fi weaponry and superpowers alongside the usual guns and grenades.

Saints Row IV is out for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC from August 23rd.
