We Happy Few (PlayStation 4)

But why would you want to escape a happy society? In a drug-fuelled joy-obsessed England, all the people are attempting to hide from the sad by being cheerfully in denial. Your only options are to hide or blend in with their not-so-normal way of living.

When happiness comes in a pill, it seems so easy to join them. The choice is yours, will you choose to take your joy… or not?

Features
Explore the Dystopian Isles of Wellington Wells
Set in retrofuturistic 1960s England, you will find a city ravaged by war and rebuilt by delusionally happy people. Everything appears to be joyful in Wellington Wells, including the roads, the people, and its omnipresent television personality, Uncle Jack! However, it’s a big, idyllic world on the brink of collapse. You will discover the history of this world, and how it came to be just so beguilingly happy.

See the World from Three Distinct Points of View
Play as three flawed characters who explore their own connections to the events surrounding the rebuilding of Wellington Wells. They each have a unique storyline in which they interpret and react to the events around them in different ways. As you hide, conform, or fight back as each of them, you will encounter dark humour, a spot of hope, and even some redemption along the way.

A Dystopia of Your Very Own
In We Happy Few, no two playthroughs are alike.  While the citizens of Wellington Wells will always want to ensure that you’ve taken your Joy, the procedurally generated world will ensure that your experience with We Happy Few is different and unique.

Take Your Joy…or Don’t. The Choice is Yours

Aside from a procedurally generated world, there are many ways to customize your We Happy Few experience:
- Choose from a range of difficulties for new and experienced players alike,
- Play through the story, or customize the sandbox world to your liking,
- Try permadeath, if you want to satisfy all your masochistic needs,
- Collect recipes, scavenge items, and craft dozens of weapons, tools, and devices,
- Creep, crush, or conform your way through puzzles and encounters
- Fight with your bare hands or the crazy weapons you create.

Developed by the imaginative Compulsion Games, We Happy Few incorporates a role-playing, survival theme with distinctive roguelike elements that keep the player hooked from the very start. For fans of Tim Burton, Henry Selick and films such as Clockwork Orange, Compulsion Games took inspiration from gothic and eccentric art, film and culture to gauge a psychedelic yet atmospheric theme for We Happy Few. Contextually based on London during the psychedelic 60s, find yourself in a creepy, dystopian society on an island called Wellington Wells surrounded by unnaturally happy, white-masked inhabitants who roam the creepy yet idyllic town. Completely overrun by a hallucinogenic drug named ‘Joy’, Wellington Wells is lawfully under the influence of ‘happiness’ that helps them to forget the anguish and guilt caused by their horrific actions that took place following an alternative World War II.

Dystopia, drugs and denial are key themes throughout the story. As this is a roguelike game, the non-linear storylines are determined by discovery and experimentation. A permadeath setting is automatically attached to the gameplay but this can be changed, ensuring that there is always a unique way to play every time you switch on your PS4. Untypical for a survival title, begin the game dressed to the nines in 60s mod clothing, feeling the withdrawal effects from refusing to take ‘Joy’. Take a first-person perspective through separate playable characters, who all have unique motivations and goals throughout the gameplay that are consequence-driven depending on the decisions that you make.Explore through the unsettling town to craft items, steal food and find places to rest as you try to escape undetected to the drug-fuelled population of Wellington Wells. Attempt to blend in with, or fight against, this deranged community in time before the impending social collapse whilst uncovering the truth behind their social control. Discover the haunting history of the island whilst defying the police and people around you who try to force you into conforming to their eerie way of life.
