The nominations for this year's Video Game BAFTA Awards have been announced, and it's an eclectic mix.

SONY's sobering PlayStation 3 adventure, The Last of Us, heads the list with ten nominations. It's up for Best Action & Adventure, Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Best Game, Game Design, Multiplayer, Music and Story awards. Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker, who play lead characters Ellie and Joel, are both up for performance awards as well.

Grand Theft Auto V is snapping at its heels, however, with nine nominations including Best British Game. Another SONY game, the delightful PS Vita exclusive Tearaway, has eight nominations. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, BioShock Infinite and Super Mario 3D World all have four nominations apiece, as does PC indie hit Papers, Please. All told, 43 games are up for awards across 17 categories.

For the first time ever, the Video Game BAFTAs will also be open to the public. The ceremony takes place on March 12 in London's Tobacco Dock. Tickets are limited, and available from BAFTA for £30. In another first, there will also be a day of hands-on gameplay demos and developer talks beforehand where you'll get the chance to play Dark Souls II, Titanfall and more. Tickets for that are just £12.
