The Fast and the Furious headed to consoles

Gearheads rejoice, Vin Diesel's nitrous-fuelled motor movie franchise is getting the blockbuster game treatment. Fast & Furious: Showdown will coincide with the summer release of the latest instalment in the surprisingly durable film series.

Surprise! It'll be a racing game, but it sounds like it will have more than a few twists to the expected formula. As well as racing in epic locations from around the world, in top of the range sports cars that you can customise to your heart's content, there'll be two player co-op and a mission-based structure.

Perhaps most intriguing of all, players will be able to choose between four different gameplay roles: driver, gunman, tactician and daredevil. Publisher Activision has yet to explain what these will involve, but screenshots and artwork show characters jumping from car to car, and leaning out of windows to shoot. It actually sounds a lot like the underrated 2009 action game Wheelman which starred, goodness gracious, a young actor by the name of Vin Diesel.

Fast & Furious: Showdown will be available on May 24th for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U.
