Bethesda has formally announced the release date for survival horror title The Evil Within. It'll be out in Europe on August 29th for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, the publisher has confirmed.

Why should you be excited? Because The Evil Within marks the return to horror gaming of Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil, that's why. Mikami left Capcom's iconic series after Resident Evil 4, and most recently brought us the super-slick sci-fi shooter Vanquish and collaborated with Lollipop Chainsaw developer Suda51 on the splatter-filled grindhouse game Shadows of the Damned.

The Evil Within takes us back to gruelling, terrifying survival horror gameplay, however. You'll be playing as Detective Sebastian Castellanos, a hard-edged cop investigating a mass killing. While poking around the crime scene he gets knocked out and wakes up in a hellish reality populated by shambling monsters and chainsaw-wielding butchers. As with the early Resident Evil games, ammo will be scarce and you'll need to play smart to get past the creatures in your path. You can knock them down and set them alight with matches, or craft and set traps for them.

"The scariest parts will be when you encounter enemies that cannot be killed with a gun," Mikami told Edge last year. "Even if you shoot them they won't die, so you'll have to run or use a trap to beat them. That should be fun - and also scary."
