Best of PlayStation in 2014

2014 was a pivotal year for Sony as the PS4 found huge sales success with a solid price point and a strong library of third-party games. While the first-party titles didn’t show up this year, PS4 is home to some of the best versions of third-party games that we have seen. While we would like to see more exclusives next year, we will easily take the library we put together this year.

If you’re a new PS4 owner or if you think you may have missed a big one, take a look at our selections for the best games to get this year.

DestinyDestiny is the culmination of a huge investment of time and resource from Bungie, developers of the Halo series. As the first of a purported ten year plan, the initial Destiny launch offered a great shooter experience coupled with multiplayer options that made the game’s worlds feel alive. When you visit the Tower, the last city on Earth, you will see a plaza teeming with activity as players gear up for their off-world adventures, either solo or, more appropriately, with a team of like-minded gamers. The game starts with missions on the moon, Mars, and Venus, but Destiny is already expanding with DLC packs, and we are looking forward to seeing how the game’s reach expands to other planets in the coming years.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor

Middle-Earth Shadow of MordorThe best Lord of the Rings-related game is not directly tied to any of the movies, making Shadow of Mordor’s achievements even more impressive. The game’s story is compelling as you play a hunter named Talion as he travels through Mordor during the time between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies. As you follow the main quest, your skills will improve and expand, leading to some amazingly powerful moments such as stealing the souls of your increasingly difficult opponents, or honing your stealth skills to allow for some breathtaking takedowns. The ladder system through which mini-bosses and captains travel add more personality to the orcs you face, leading to some grudges which will carry on with you throughout the entirety of the game. Great fun.

Far Cry 4

Far Cry 4Sometimes, you just want a great open-world shooter that executes everything perfectly, and Far Cry 4 is that shooter. The game has a vast landscape to explore that will take you months to fully complete. The main storyline is engaging and the voice acting is particularly strong, and there are choices that offer branching paths that will affect how the story pans out. While you’re headed from mission to mission, the side quests that abound are extremely enticing, making each play session a unique experience. Everything from using a wingsuit to hunting bears and rhinos make this a living playground that offers the most fun we’ve had this year.

Assassin’s Creed Unity

Assassin's Creed UnityAssassin’s Creed remains one of our favourite series, and Assassin’s Creed Unity continues the legacy with a strong, although not exactly unique, edition set during the French Revolution. If you are familiar with Assassin’s Creed, you already know what to expect: combo-driven attacks coupled with stealth gameplay and an enticing story that combines history with a series-spanning storyline set in the future. Ubisoft has done well to add free patches to the game to improve its stability, and the gameplay has improved as such. DLC will also be available for free to everyone, so you will continue your adventures long after completing the core game.

Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto VRockstar helped wrap up the last generation of consoles with Grand Theft Auto V, but now they have brought it to PS4 (and Xbox One), fully-remastered to take advantage of the additional horsepower found in the new consoles. Graphics are sharper and your environment feels more alive, and a new first-person camera brings you into the world in a new way for the series. More pedestrians traffic the streets, the forests are teeming with wildlife, and, yes, the explosions look amazing. Grand Theft Auto V on PS4 is the ultimate version to pick up, and well worth another look even if you’re a GTA veteran.

LittleBigPlanet 3

LittleBigPlanet 3LittleBigPlanet 3 is more of the same LittleBigPlanet that we have grown to love, imitating the same hooks and storybook feel of the previous entries in the series. Developer Sumo Digital, taking over from Media Molecule, has made some sharp additions that improve the game’s basic platforming tenets, but make no mistake in thinking there is something significantly new in the overall gameplay of LittleBigPlanet 3. That is not a bad thing at all, and if you’re a fan of previous entries in the series, LittleBigPlanet 3 is sure to please.

The Last of Us Remastered

The Last of Us: Remastered2014 may be known as the year of the remake, with Grand Theft Auto V and Master Chief Collection as some of the biggest games of the season. Looking at the Playstation exclusives, we also see The Last of Us Remastered as a new take on an “old” game. Coming out towards the latter part of PS3’s lifespan, The Last of Us was a tense adventure that put you in control of escorting a young girl into a safe haven for the good of all mankind. The story is riveting and the gameplay is very much of the Uncharted variety, focused on gunplay mixed in with hand-to-hand combat and stealth moves. The game looks absolutely beautiful and the overall experience is top-notch. If you missed this one on PS3, there is simply no reason to let it pass you by again.
