Super Mario Maker 2 gets a legendary update. This free update adds Link from the Legend of Zelda™ series as a playable character, new course parts and a new gameplay mode. The new Master Sword item will be available to use exclusively in the 8-bit Super Mario Bros. style. When this new course part is picked up, Mario will transform into Link, equipped with a new set of moves like attacking with a sword, shooting arrows and dropping bombs.  In addition to Link, the update also adds more course parts and enemies, as well as a new Ninji Speedruns mode, perfect for players looking for a challenge.

  • Dash Block: Available in the Super Mario 3D World style, the Dash Block course part gives Mario a major speed burst when stepped on.
  • Frozen Coin: These coins are surrounded by a block of ice and can only be released if melted by fireballs or other fire elements, including a certain angry sun.
  • P Block: When a P Switch is hit in the course, invisible P Blocks temporarily turn into hard platforms, or vice-versa.
  • Spike: This classic enemy coughs up massive spike balls and launches them at Mario. If used in the snow environment, Spike will toss snowballs instead!
  • Pokey: The iconic stacked cactus from multiple Super Mario games joins Super Mario Maker 2 for the first time. Players can even edit the height of each Pokey.

    You can lay the groundwork for unique Mario courses which you can share with others! Use new tools, course parts and features at your disposal as you let your imagination run wild. You decide every element of the courses: choose from underwater, underground or the legendary outside terrain as you design your own Mario world.

    Building has never been so easy. Two players can build courses together on a single Nintendo Switch screen, enabling players to put their creative minds together to build as they wish. 

    In local multiplayer, up to four players can try and beat created courses by other Super Mario Maker 2 players at the same time! If you have a Nintendo Switch Online membership, you can also upload your levels for others to play! There are plenty of courses created that you can play immediately or download to play later. The adventures never have to end with so many courses available. 

    This sequel to the original game also introduces a brand-new story mode where you must help rebuild Princess Peach’s castle! There are over 100 original levels designed by Nintendo for you to play through.

    Available for a limited time, the Super Mario Maker 2 Limited Edition bundle includes the game and a 12-month Individual Membership for Nintendo Switch Online. This is Nintendo’s online gaming service that allows members to play against each other in compatible titles, access a growing library of NES games, and much more.

    Will Super Mario Maker 2 require Nintendo Online?

    Whilst it’s not compulsory, Nintendo Online is required for certain elements of the game. This includes uploading your created courses for the community to play, as well as downloading other creations.
