South Park: Stick of Truth script was originally 850 pages long

Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of cult cartoon hit South Park

Release Date: 19/07/2013

Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of cult cartoon hit South Park and the writers of the upcoming RPG spin-off, The Stick of Truth, have taken to the stage at the San Diego Comic Con and revealed a little about their inspirations and their somewhat over-ambitious plans for the game.

"I really loved playing Skyrim, as many people did," Parker said during the panel, as reported by Polygon. "After getting lost in the expansive world and huge cast of characters of Bethesda's game, "I was like 'Let's do this. This is easy.'"

That enthusiasm apparently resulted in Stone and Parker turning in a script for the game that was 850 pages long, leading developer Obsidian to joke that the game might finally be released in 2032. The script was cut back, but the writers don't plan on wasting the material, vowing that it will turn up in some form or another, possibly even in episodes of the TV show. The prospect of releasing it as DLC was apparently suggested, but Parker's curt two-word response to that idea make it seem unlikely.

Nor will the game crossover with the TV show. "We did have this whole delusion of actually incorporating the game into the season," Parker said, "But that sounds like a bitch. We really just wanted it to be that you could pick it up anywhere and it would kind of make sense."

South Park: The Stick of Truth was originally going to be published by THQ, but after that company went bust earlier this year, Ubisoft stepped in. "Once we heard who had bought it, we got really excited," Parker explained. "We flew up to [Ubisoft] and all that momentum picked up and we got really excited again."

Stone and Parker also proved their gamer credentials, citing obscure Nintendo RPG Earthbound (re-released this week on the eShop) as a major influence, and also praising the Crash Bandicoot series as one of their favourites.

South Park: The Stick of Truth is in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, and should be out later this year.
