SONY took to the stage at the annual Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last night and confirmed that the company is developing a virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4.

Codenamed Project Morpheus, the device is similar to the Oculus Rift headset that has been making waves on the PC scene. It will boast a 1080p HD display and built-in 3D audio, so no need to wear headphones on top of the headset. It will use the PlayStation 4 camera in conjunction with accelerometer and gyroscope sensors to track your head movement and replicate the view in-game. It will also be compatible with the DualShock 4 controller and PlayStation Move.

"Virtual reality is the next innovation from SCE that we believe will shape the future of games," said SONY's President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida in a subsequent blog post. "I have long dreamed about VR and the possibilities it brings in regards to game development," he went on. "This new technology will deliver a sense of presence, where you as the player actually feel like you're inside the game and your emotions feel that much more real."

Morpheus has been in development for three years, and the latest prototype was fully playable on the GDC show floor. What do you think? Which SONY games are you itching to play in virtual reality?
