Skylanders Trap Team Preview

Activision and Toys for Bob have an impressive streak of successful Skylanders video games, ever since Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure debuted in 2011. Since then, a total of three Skylanders games were released, but Skylanders: Trap Team is set to once again turn the series on its head, as Portal Masters will not only collect new Trap Team toys, but also control enemies using Traptanium.

Kaos is up to no good once again

Skylanders: Trap Team features the series’ main protagonist, Kaos, who releases the worst villains Skylands has ever seen after blowing up Cloudcracker Prison, which contained these evildoers with a strange material known as Traptanium. As a result of the destruction, pieces of Traptanium were sent to different locations, including Earth.

Gotta trap ‘em all

Each Skylanders: Trap Team starter pack will contain pieces of Traptanium, allowing Portal Masters the ability to trap villains they battle within the game. When players defeat an enemy, they’re able to capture it by placing a piece of Traptanium into the new Portal of Power. The process of transferring not only trapped enemies but also Skylanders is more engrossing through the use of a speaker located on the Portal of Power. When a character gets transferred, it’ll produce audible reactions played from either the portal’s speaker to the player’s TV, or vice versa. This is one feature that should never get old no matter how many times it occurs, as each character possesses multiple reactions, ranging from complete fear to enthusiasm.

Portal Masters have the option of calling trapped villains at any time during their adventures. Trapped villains are more powerful than Skylanders, although they have a certain time limit for how long they can be used. Once the time limit depletes, the player will need to allow the trapped enemy to recharge in order to use this character again.

Trap Masters use the power of Traptanium to fight

In addition to the standard Skylanders characters, Trap Team will introduce new elite heroes called Trap Masters. Each Trap Master is slightly larger than the average Skylander, although not as large as a Giant. Trap Masters harness the power of Traptanium into powerful weapons, which are most effective against trappable enemies. Considering how much tougher these trappable enemies are compared to average villains, Trap Masters will undoubtedly become powerful allies that Portal Masters will need in order to defeat Kaos.

Use Skylanders figures you already own, with improvements

One aspect of the Skylanders series both parents and long-time collectors appreciate is the fact that all figures released since 2011 are compatible with each new video game. This continues with Skylanders: Trap Team, complete with character improvements we’ve seen over the years. For example, Skylanders figures released in the original Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure weren’t able to jump. It was in the next version of the game, Skylanders: Giants, where they received this ability, and this carries over to Trap Team. To date, approximately 175 Skylanders toys have been released, which means if this is your first time playing the series, you’ll have more than enough figures to collect.

Skylanders: Trap Team will keep you coming back for more

After Trap Team arrives, developer Toys for Bob plans to release several additional Skylanders and Trap Masters toys for months. This means if you want to enjoy the full Trap Team experience, Portal Masters will need to purchase one of these new figures to unlock them to play within the game.

Traptanium will also play an important role for those who want to bring their captured villains with them wherever they go. As Portal Masters continue to play with their captured enemies, they’ll gain experience and become even stronger than before.

Once again, Toys for Bob and Activision hope to create the go-to family-friendly game this holiday season. If Skylanders: Trap Team continues the tradition of combining excellent gameplay mechanics with a unique cast of characters and game world, they’ll accomplish their objective.
