Saints Row IV: Re-Elected & Gat out of Hell on Xbox One and PlayStation 4

It's hard out here for a Saint

The Saints Row franchise evolved over time, from serious gang banging to over-the-top lunacy, with gun battles from a helicopter to something more outlandish, like the President (with actor Keith David as a running mate) battling an alien armada with a super-powered American-themed cannon. For its latest trick, Deep Silver delivered a double dose of Saints goodness with a Saints Row IV Re-Elected remix, as well as a new chapter, the highly entertaining Gat Out of Hell.

With Re-Elected, the player controls the President as he (or she, equal-opportunity mayhem) battles alien invaders through a virtual Steelport City, determined to turn the tide and hopefully save the human race.

Meanwhile, with Gat Out of Hell, players choose from either vicious gunman Johnny Gat or tech genius Kinzie as they descend into Hell to rescue one of their own, who could (or could not) be doomed for all eternity by marrying Satan's daughter. What follows, as you might guess, is plenty of madness, thanks to the introduction of different power-ups.

Election year

First up, there's Re-Elected, which for the most part is a wonderful remix of the 2013 release. There are plenty of situations that players will come across in this game, whether it's raising havoc in the 1950s with a rocket launcher, or flying through an enormous space cruiser while the song What Is Love blares in the background; on top of that, the player is naked.

The game never takes itself seriously. That’s impossible to do, with players power-kicking aliens into the stratosphere, running through the city at light speed and shutting down generators with super-punching techniques.

Throw in an open-world with plenty of missions to find, outfits to change into (the hot dog costume is a personal favourite) and a wealth of items to unlock, and you have a game with plenty of value. The inclusion of all of the Saints Row IV DLC, including the profanely humorous How the Saints Save Christmas, only serves to cement this bundle’s quality.

A hell of a time

On the other side is the brand new entry, Gat Out of Hell. Players control Johnny and/or Kinzie as they use a number of transportation methods to get through the city of Hell, whether they're flapping with temporary wings or steering a super-charged monster truck that acts as a police vehicle for local law enforcement.

In addition, Gat Out of Hell has no shortage of hilarious moments, between impromptu musical numbers and the introduction of side characters that have a peculiar place in Hell, including William Shakespeare and a pair of familiar leather clad twins from Saints Row the Third.

These characters serve a purpose, not only providing secondary missions to earn their trust and additional weaponry, but also new power-ups, including a freezing ability that stops enemies in their tracks (allowing you to shoot them to pieces) and being able to summon imps that do some dirty work.

The variety of missions is welcome, like when you guide a corpse through an explosive trip to rack up a number of damnation years (it makes sense when you do it) or go on flying races that are more fun than you might expect for a series that usually stays on the ground. It only lasts a few hours, but we consider Gat Out of Hell time well spent.

Saints for a new generation

Saints Row IV Re-Elected & Gat Out of Hell marks the debut of the franchise for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and while it's not quite on the level of what Metro Redux delivered last year (with its stunning visuals and complete package feel), Deep Silver did the game justice.

Sints Row IV: Gat Out of Hell on PS4 and Xbox One

The frame rate managed to jump a bit between the two games, but the detail never falters. The animations look good as well, whether it's the tiny flap of the demonic wings or the fiery explosions that come from downing a bothersome alien cruiser.

The voice acting, meanwhile, is not only excellent, but also funny, with Keith David, Nolan North and Daniel Dae Kim delivering impressive performances. Throw in a few radio stations with everything from rap to 80s music, and you have plenty of fun tunes to listen to.

Once a Saint, always a Saint

Saints Row IV: Re-Elected & Gat Out of Hell provide a double dose of hilarity and action, packed into a convenient, thoroughly priced package that few will turn down. While the visuals could've used a bit more work, there's no questioning the game's value. In the end, you'll find enough stuff to do to remain occupied while you wait for Saints Row V.

GAME's Verdict: 8/10

The Good

  • Outstanding value between the remixed Saints Row IV and Gat out of Hell.
  • Gameplay doesn't disappoint, with lots to do and numerous missions.
  • Terrific audio, between top-notch voice acting and quality music.

The Bad

  • Inconsistent frame rate.
  • Gat Out of Hell is too short.
