Review Roundup: Metro Last Light

Format:
It's been a long and hard road for bleak Soviet shooter sequel Metro: Last Light

Release Date: 14/05/2013

It's been a long and hard road for bleak Soviet shooter sequel Metro: Last Light. After original publisher THQ went bust, only a few months before the game's planned release, fans of the series held their breath to see what would become of 4A Games post-apocalyptic baby.

Enter Deep Silver, the publisher behind Dead Island, which has swooped in on angel wings to carry Metro the last few steps to market. Was it worth all the effort and heartache? According to the critics, the answer is a hearty yes.

Joystiq awards the PC version four and a half stars, and even compares the game favourably to the mighty Half Life. There's praise, too, for the way it balances eerie horror and gunplay action. "The survival and shooting aspects engage with what is considered valuable in the world," reads the review, "and both leave ample room for moments of solace, exploration and concise violence."

Gamespot is similarly impressed, offering a 9/10 score and summing up the game as "an astonishing and moving postapocalyptic journey". Indeed, the game's superb world-building is a common theme across the reviews, as Games Radar also singles out the attention to detail as a highpoint of the Last Light experience. "Subtlety is what makes Last Light such an exceptionally immersive game," declares the four and half star review. "It nails the core tenets of a shooter, then forces you to react to enemies in ways outside of simply taking cover. It plops you in a post-apocalyptic world, then fills it with tons of minor but substantial details, like the shadows of once-living people now permanently nuked into stone walls."

Metro: Last Light is out this week for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
