Review Roundup: LEGO Marvel Super Heroes

DC Comics fans can keep themselves warm this winter with the fantastic Batman: Arkham Origins, but it's been a long time since Marvel fans had a game to really get excited about. That's about to change when LEGO Marvel Super Heroes lands in the UK next week.

Another entry in the homegrown family gaming series, this one offers a huge open New York playground and over 100 playable Marvel characters. During the story mode you'll get to control the obvious heavy hitters of the comic book universe - Captain America, Spider-Man, Hulk, Fantastic Four and various X-Men - but poke around the map and you'll be able to find everyone from Daredevil to Howard the Duck waiting to be unlocked. Yes, Howard the Duck is in this.

It's "the best thing to happen to Marvel games since 2006's Marvel Ultimate Alliance" reckons IGN, slapping a 9/10 score on the result. "It's a warm and witty, multi-layered approach to the brand that ties in hundreds of Marvel's most iconic characters, settings, and stories," they say.

There's a 9/10 from Game Informer too. "LEGO Marvel marks the first time I've had as much fun in the hub world as in the story-based missions," declares their review, which praises the sheer wealth of stuff to do in the game, including races, puzzles, quests and even a spot of skydiving. "Variety abounds," is their conclusion.

As with all the LEGO games, it's designed to be enjoyed by everyone, but hardcore comic nerds will get an extra special kick out of it, according to Polygon. "For someone who grew up reading The Avengers - or is growing up watching them now - it offers something I never thought I'd see: a virtual recreation of a huge swath of the Marvel Universe in all its sensational, astonishing and uncanny glory", says their 8.5 review.

GAME also gave it 8.5 in our review. We think it's "... one of the best brick-built games to date" and "just good fun", adding "It's not every day you get to see Hulk and his equally sized adversary Abomination get in a slap fight..."

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes launches on current generation consoles and PC on November 15th, with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions following at launch.
