Review Roundup: Gran Turismo 6

Gran Turismo 6, the latest entry in the swankiest racing simulator series has stuck dutifully to the PS3. But what do the critics think?

Release Date: 06/12/2013

So, yes, everybody is talking about the PlayStation 4 right now and that's all incredibly exciting. But we've still got PS3s and SONY, bless 'em, haven't forgotten that. Cue Gran Turismo 6, the latest entry in the swankiest racing simulator series, and one that has stuck dutifully to the PS3. It's another stat-munching monster of a game - over a thousand cars and over seventy track layouts - but it's also a game that's not afraid to be a bit weird, letting you race on the moon.

What do the critics think? It's a 9/10 from Polgon, in a review that mentions some sluggish load times and annoying micropayments, but concludes that developer Polyphony Digital has never had so much fun. "Polyphony Digital's love for cars has always been clear, but it's always felt a little cold and mechanical", reads the review. "The benefits of that technical expertise still exist in Gran Turismo 6, but they're put to much more enthusiastic use. The result is a massive, passionate game and a fitting final lap for the PlayStation 3."

"15 years since its inception, Gran Turismo carries on its pursuit much as it always has, delivering a driving simulator that's as exhausting as it is exhaustive, as infuriating as it is intoxicating," declares Eurogamer's 9/10 review which concludes that the game represents "the broadest, most complete iteration of [Polyphony's] epic vision.

CVG is also smitten, to the tune of an 8/10 review, though it makes a point of criticising the limited collision physics and weedy sound effects (these are to be patched, post launch, SONY claims). Mostly, CVG's reviewer loves how generous the game is - and how in tune with what racers want. "When it comes to tracks, however, GT6 comprehensively murders absolutely everything else out there," he says. "It is, hands down, the best range of circuits assembled for a racing videogame I've ever played."

So there you have it. The next gen may have arrived, but there's plenty of life in the last generation too. Gran Turismo 6 is out now for PlayStation 3.
