Halo: The Master Chief Collection for Xbox One at GAME

Halo and the Xbox platform go together like peanut butter and jelly, cream and sugar and Master Chief and Cortana. This year, Xbox One owners may not receive an official sequel to the franchise, but they will get a complete collection of all Halo games that starred everyone's favourite Spartan, Master Chief. 343 Industries didn't stop at throwing together all of these titles onto a Blu-ray disc, as they also enhanced each game's audio and visuals, even going so far as to create new cutscenes for Halo 2. Could this be the best compilation of the Halo series to date, or should you wait for Halo 5: Guardians next year? Here's our review.

Hello, Halo

Halo: The Master Chief Collection offers the complete experience found in Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4. This means you'll be able to partake in each title's story as well as extras, which include all of the multiplayer maps and gameplay modes. Each Halo runs at 1080p and 60 frames per second, and seeing them in high resolution and at that frame speed is something to behold. Best of all, the collection has all game modes, difficulties and levels across all Halo titles unlocked, so players can jump right in at any point of each game's campaign.

Both Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 feature remastered graphics, which gamers can toggle at any time during play to show how antiqued they are compared to the new generation. Switching between classic and remastered graphics is certainly a treat during key segments of the games to see what kind of work 343 Industries put into the visuals, although most players won't even realise such a feature exists. Halo 3 and Halo 4, on the other hand, were released in high definition on the Xbox 360, so the only improvements they'll see is the addition of tweaked lighting in addition to the 60 frames per second and 1080p treatment.

Multiplayer mayhem

Halo: The Master Chief Collection will probably win a world record for having the largest variety of multiplayer maps in a single game, with over 100 multiplayer maps in the compilation. As much as players try to wrap their heads around this number, it's something that is completely astounding to behold, as you could experience a ton of maps across all four Halo games and feel like you've barely scratched the surface. The maps span not only each game's disc, but also previously released downloadable maps and even PC-exclusive stages.

In addition, 343 Industries gave the anniversary treatment to six Halo 2 multiplayer maps. This means these maps will offer better visuals and new features, although those who prefer to play the classic versions of these maps can do so.

As far as matchmaking goes, The Master Chief Collection supports it through dedicated servers and offers a 1-50 skill ranking system. A number of multiplayer playlists allow gamers to fight through the multiplayer maps of a specific game, while other playlists will allow players to vote for maps across all of the included Halo titles. Halo 4's Spartan Ops missions weren’t available during this review, but all 50 missions will be available in an upcoming update sometime in December 2014.

The Master Chief Collection also includes playlists that allow you to play the compilation a number of ways. There are a number of playlists to experience that will task the player with completing a series of missions or events in order to finish that playlist. These vary from basic tasks, such as completing a game on the Legendary difficulty setting, to some very creative playlists that allow fans to experience all of the most action-packed moments of the entire Halo series one after another. Best of all, you can have a friend join you in attempting to complete any of the included playlists.

The Covenant don’t stand a chance

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the perfect game for fans of the Halo series, as it successfully pays homage to one of the most influential video game franchises in history. 343 Industries certainly thought outside the box when putting together this collection, through the combination of various improvements to each game, the inclusion of all Halo multiplayer maps and the use of various playlists. Master Chief and the world around him has never looked and played better, which unfortunately is bad news for the Covenant.

GAME's Verdict: 10/10
