Rayman Legends gets final release date and free Wii U app

Originally planned as a Wii U exclusive in February, Rayman Legends startled fans by merrily hopping to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at the last minute, resulting in a delay until later this year. Ubisoft has now confirmed what "later this year" means in real time, and it's August 30th. That's when the French publisher's limb-less mascot will be back in action.

Wii U owners shouldn't get too steamed up about the shift though. By way of compensation, Ubisoft has released a free Rayman Legends Challenges app on the Wii U store. This offers a four level taster of the sumptuous platforming action we can expect in the full game, and will be updated with new weekly and monthly challenges to keep you busy.

The game is a sequel to the 2011 sleeper hit Rayman Origins, which reinvented the Rayman character - first seen in 1995 - as a frantic side-scrolling four-player co-operative platform jumping epic. It's one of the best pure platformers ever made, and if you've not tried it you've got the summer to catch up before the sequel arrives for Wii U, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
