Kinect Sports: Rivals uses cloud AI to emulate your performance

One of the advantages of Xbox One's cloud storage is that it will enable multiplayer games to store information about how you play, allowing for virtual versions of yourself that can compete against friends. That's the idea behind Forza 5's Drivatar system, and it's also central to Kinect Sports: Rivals.

"Sports are so much more meaningful when you're playing against people you know, obviously, whether they're your friends or Rivals," Rare's Danny Isaac has told OXM. "Rather than just have random AI characters, we have this thing where you can scan yourself in, so that the Champion becomes you."

Not only will your character look like you, they'll also play like you - even when you're offline. The game will even take notice of which power-ups you use the most, and ensure that your friends will feel like they're being challenged by you personally.

"Not only that," adds Isaac, "it looks at your skill level and how well you've played, so when I play against you your character will be there and it'll perform at your sort of skill level as well. So, even when I'm playing by myself and you're offline, it feels like I'm playing around with my friends and family."

Kinect Sports: Rivals was originally intended as a launch title for Microsoft's new console, but will now release in early 2014. By way of compensation, you'll be able to download a free trial of the game - Kinect Sports: Rivals Preseason - which includes wakeboarding. The other events in the full game are climbing, bowling, tennis, soccer and target shooting.
