You may be wondering why Naughty Dog's gripping and gruelling apocalyptic adventure, The Last of Us, is getting a PS4 remake when it only came out on PS3 last year. Turns out the truth is that a lot of PlayStation 4 owners didn't own a PlayStation 3, and so never got the chance to play it.

How does Sony know this? Through the PlayStation Network, of course. With accounts that work across PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, it's possible to sort the data to show which games have been played and how many players are new to the PlayStation platform this time around.

"The Last of Us is considered one of the most significant titles of the last console generation, winning countless awards. It would be almost unfair for all our new fans to never play a game like this," Sony UK's Josh Walker told industry mag MCV. "We’ve looked at PSN data and can see a huge proportion of PS4 players haven’t experienced The Last of Us yet."

Sony reckons this is because players have switched from Xbox and Wii last time around to PlayStation. "This is quite indicative of the shift in the market and the many players who have migrated from competitive platforms that we’re glad to welcome to PlayStation," Walker said.

The Last of Us: Remastered Edition is out for PlayStation 4 on August 1st and not only spruces up an already gorgeous game with full 60fps, 1080p visuals but comes packaged with all the original DLC, including multiplayer maps and the critically acclaimed Left Behind story expansion.
