The Boeing 777: Globe-spanning Beauty

Release Date: 09-Jan-2012
The Boeing 777:  Globe-spanning Beauty

Watch an arrival of a 'triple-seven'; the faces of those about to board. No Mediterranean holiday bus this, but transport to the far side of the world.

Like a caravan across the desert this aircraft can traverse vast distances and unlike its four-engined stable mate - does not include the camel's hump! This is a machine of beauty.

The Boeing 777 represents a huge investment by Boeing, and can truly be described as their glass-cockpit flagship.

Like a number of trans-oceanic Airbus the 777 is an aircraft that has known controversy. Some still question ETOPS (Extended-Range Twin Operations) and it is true that oceanic flight paths do differ from that of four-engined equivalents... but worry not! A single one of the 777s incredible turbofans delivers more thrust than all four of a 707's combined!

The 777 is astonishing. With a range of nearly 9,500 miles, it can fly at 43,000ft and in the 200 variant as simulated here - carry over 300 passengers in wide-body luxury.

A Pre Flight Walk around

Whichever of the many airlines you select, this 777 simulation for FSX and FS2004 is a beauty. Complete with High Resolution 32-bit textures representing a wide variety of carriers, the easy to use paint-kit also allows simple generation of additional liveries where desired. The animations include hydraulic suspension, flaps, slats, spoilerons, speed brakes, thrust reversers, PAX/cargo doors, and detailed gear sequencing.

In the FS2004 implementation, flexible wings respond to real aeronautical variable... in turbulence the wing will clearly bounce up and down!

The aircraft is also expertly optimized and frame rate friendly

Extended-Range Twin-Engine Operations (ETOPS)

For some, the very safety of modern flight has taken something with it, lose one of four engines mid Atlantic and many will regard the late arrival an inconvenience. Lose one of two and passengers start to fidget.

In fact ETOPS operation does incur additional operational requirements to ensure safety, and adds extra interest to planning a route over the ocean. The four-engined competition can often fly more directly – but the 777 is a very fast ship, and born with an electronic star to steer her by! Plan properly and you'll still land first!

The Flight Deck that took Boeing into the new era!

In the 777, Boeing brought to their range an aircraft that combined the best of Boeing's tradition with features more usually associated with Airbus.  The glass cockpit is one of the best, and in the Wilco/Feelthere offering is exquisitely implemented.

The weather radar is no generic graphic but a fully functioning implementation showing clouds density, rains, storms… if you enter wind shear in this cockpit – you've not been paying attention!

For the very first time, the 777's long range planning and navigation features of airway input into the Flight Management System (FMS) are brought to Microsoft Simulator.

Clear and smooth displays are ensured by Vector graphic (GDI+) technology – and what displays! FMS, SIDs and STARS, POS init, RTE, LEGS, FIX, PROGRESS, VNAV, NAV are all beautifully executed. Pilots with multi-monitor systems will particularly appreciate the pop-up EFIS panels while ‘hotspots’ make the desired display of any 2D sub panel swift and convenient.

Keeping you current, the database for the Flight management Computer (FMC)  is regularly updated.

The accurate autopilot control panel, Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) with multiple callouts, TCAS Traffic Avoidance Systems and electronic checklists (that automatically update to reflect flight phase) are sure to keep you safe in flight.

On the ground, The 'triple-Seven's' unique Automatic Engine Start is also replicated, together with full APU startup/shutdown sequences, battery and generator switches for a complete 'cold and dark' cockpit condition.

Pilots daunted by the number of acronyms and technical systems above need not fear, this 777 simulation comes with a comprehensive and very reader-friendly manual, Moreover the implemented features are themselves a carefully selected balance between complexity and usability, perfectly suited to  the beginner or medium experienced pilot.

Those with a taste for hardware, will also be pleased to know the aircraft also supports Go Flight modules (FS2004 version) and Track IR Deluxe Pack.
