Minecraft on PlayStation 4.

Microsoft may have bought Minecraft publisher Mojang, but that doesn't mean PlayStation owners are going to miss out. Sony has announced that the world-building classic, which launched digitally on PlayStation 4 earlier in September, will also be getting a retail disc release in October.

The physical version goes on sale 3 October, and will have a Day One patch to incorporate any changes and updates that the digital version has enjoyed in the meantime. The PlayStation 4 version of the game boasts worlds that are 36 times larger than were possible on the PlayStation 3, and you'll also be able to carry over any saved games from the older console so you won't lose your creations.

That only leaves the long-awaited PlayStation Vita edition of the game, and Sony says news on that will be available soon. “We’ll have more information on this in a few weeks and will include full details on how the Cross-Buy works between the PS3 and PS Vita Editions”, says the company's official blog update.

It remains to be seen what Microsoft's plans are for Minecraft in the long term, but for now the company has vowed to keep the game available on all its current platforms. Your worlds are safe.
