IN MIDDLE-EARTH: SHADOW OF WAR, NOTHING WILL BE FORGOTTEN.

Prepare yourself for an incredible journey to Mordor, battling monsters and evil along the way, all to avenge your murdered wife and kill the dark lord Sauron. Set in-between the storylines of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, Shadow of War is the sequel to award-winning Shadow of Mordor.

Your mission this time is to travel across the lands of your enemies, building an army on your way that will be big enough to take down Sauron and avenge your wife. Much like the original, you continue the game as Tailon the half dead ranger with Celebrimbor the dark elf who shares your body, helping you use mythical powers to complete your goals.

Fighting your enemies is a common part of most games, but you don’t usually get to control them. Transform orcs from big scary enemies into your loyal servants and soldiers with Celebrimbor’s mind controlling powers. Now that they are fighting for your cause, you get to decide which battles they take part in, bearing in mind that not all battles are the same – each stronghold has different occupants, weaknesses, strengths and defences. Orcs are great for battering down castle gates but they aren’t so successful when faced with long ranged snipers. As the General, you will have to decide on war tactics as well as which team is best suited for the next battle.

If you are impressed by one of your recruits work you can reward them with promotions like becoming the warden of one of your strongholds. They will then take charge of your new lands, fighting off any attackers who may try storming the gates. Just be prepared for the changes that happen when you appoint a new warden – choosing an orc from the Savage tribe will transform a neat and tidy fort into one covered in spikes and war paint. Mini quests relating to the new leader’s tribe will appear too.

The new mechanics make the game more fluid than its predecessor. Instead of sticking to a solid script that everyone will see, every decision you make will change the entire game, making your experience different to everyone else’s. Another new feature is the social conquest modes which allow the player to purchase new items to adorn their castles with and share online with the community. Be careful though as once your stronghold is online, it can be attacked by anyone, with any size army.

If you want to try out an attack, you will be greeted with two options before you begin – ranked or friendly. Friendly fights allow you to get some practice in but you won’t win any rewards or gain any army level ups. Ranked fights are more dangerous – you can win rewards and improve your assault rating, but your army can also be killed. And if your captain dies in a ranked fight, he is dead for good and won’t miraculously come back at the end.
The Nemesis system is returning, only bigger and better than before. Being the best way to improve your skills on the battlefield, the Nemesis system pits you against fighters that you have previously lost to so you can find your weakness and become a better warrior.
