Resident Evil HD on PlayStation 4 at GAME.co.uk

A genuine classic finds its way back onto consoles this week, as Capcom releases Resident Evil HD Remaster, a spruced up version of the original survival horror hit. It's actually a remaster of the more realistic looking 2002 GameCube version rather than the considerably cruder 1996 PlayStation game, but has the gameplay stood the test of time?

Videogamer.com thinks so, giving the remastered version a 9/10 score. “Everything in Resident Evil unfolds beautifully,” reads the review, “each element complementing the next. Unlike later iterations, Resi remake isn't bogged down by lore: it's an old-fashioned mystery with a sci-fi twist.”

Game Informer goes a little further, delivering a 9.5 score and offering particular praise for the option to play with modern analogue stick controls as well as the original rotate-and-move “tank” style movement. “The result is a liberating, intuitive, and immediately satisfying,” says the review.

IGN offers an 8/10 score, saying: “Resident Evil relies on atmosphere, tough limitations, and danger creeping around all corners, and this port recaptures the formula of a classic, relentless survival-horror game.”

And the Metro also offers an 8/10 verdict, taking special note of the “wonderfully awful dialogue and acting” that fans will love. “The quality of both the original game and the remake shine through,” it concludes, “with a sense of slow-burning tension that is the equal to any modern game.”

Resident Evil HD Remaster is out for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One from 20 January.
