Alien: Isolation creeps out of the shadows

SEGA has officially revealed Alien: Isolation, an upcoming survival horror game based on Ridley Scott's terrifying 1979 sci-fi classic.

You'll play as Amanda, the daughter that Sigourney Weaver's Ripley left behind when she set off on the Nostromo's ill-fated voyage. Set in between the events of Alien and James Cameron's Aliens, you'll investigate Ripley's mysterious disappearance and come face to face with the familiar xenomorph.

And, yes, that's xenomorph singular. Unlike previous Alien games which have taken the Colonial Marines and all-out action of Cameron's sequel as their inspiration, this will be a taut and claustrophobic game with just one Alien hunting you down.

"We wanted to build something that was about instinct and unpredictability so that it's less about analysing his logic patterns and more about him as a living creature that will fight to survive," lead game designer Clive Lindop has told Eurogamer. "It's one of our biggest challenges, because this isn't just 'an alien' - it's the Alien. We're effectively going against the grain of 15 years of games where in every other iteration you've got a pulse rifle, there's loads of them and you're mowing them down. One of our primary aims is to effectively communicate to the player that this is not one of those guys. This is the original aggressive hunter."

Alien: Isolation is being developed by Creative Assembly, best known for the strategy games such as Total War: Rome II. It's due on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC later this year.
