Lord of the Rings spin-off Shadow of Mordor announced

Warner Bros has announced it's working on a new Lord of the Rings game, due for release next year

Warner Bros has announced it's working on a new Lord of the Rings game, due for release next year.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is set in between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and casts players as Talion, a ranger who is killed by Sauron's army as the dark lord returns to Mordor. You're resurrected with the same abilities as the Ring Wraiths and set off to get your revenge, a quest that will involve the nine Rings of Power.

There will also be something called the Nemesis system, which will enable AI characters to react to your actions and decisions, and form personal rivalries with you that will vary from game to game.

The game is being developed by Monolith, best known for creating the F.E.A.R and Condemned: Criminal Origins games. It most recently launched the Guardians of Middle-earth MOBA title, and also gave us the Batman multiplayer FPS spin-off, Gotham City Guardians.

Peter Jackson and his Weta special effects workshop will also be lending a hand, "to ensure that the settings, characters and story align authentically within canon".

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor will be coming to PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
