Crazy chaotic sandbox sequel Just Cause 3 has been officially announced, but will this one launch with multiplayer included? It seems not – and maybe that's a good thing.

The previous game in the series, Just Cause 2, came out way back in March 2010 and was a single player only affair. Fans eventually modified the PC version of that game to allow shared maps, but developer Avalanche isn't expecting fans to do the same this time around.

"The mod is absolutely fantastic," Avalanche co-founder Christofer Sundberg has told Game Informer. "We owe those guys a lot. They have actually supported the game and helped it stay alive so many years after it was released. We don't expect the fans to make the multiplayer for Just Cause 3, but at some point you have to make a choice on where your focus is. Our strength is the sandbox experience, and we want to deliver a great Just Cause 3 experience. Maybe sometime down the line, we'll take Rico into the modern world of multiplaying."

A likely solution is that multiplayer is being developed for Just Cause 3 separately, by Shinra Technologies, the cloud computing specialist wing of publisher Square Enix. “What we see in the near future are cloud games that are developed from the ground up as well as games that are in an existing pipeline that we will enhance," Shinra's head of business, Jacob Novak, told Game Informer. "For example, taking a game that doesn't have multiplayer right now and easily giving it multiplayer is what we imagine for enhancements. We're working on a possible future collaboration with Avalanche Studios."

This could be the best of both worlds, as Avalanche gets to do what it does best and develop a stunning single player game, while fans wanting to share that experience with others will be treated to a multiplayer mode developed by online specialists.

Just Cause 3 is heading to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2015.
