Halo 5: Guardians

Next year's entry in the Halo series may be the last one to have a number, says Bonnie Ross, boss of developer 343 Industries. “At some point, we do want to stop numbering. Especially on Xbox One,” she has told Official Xbox Magazine.

“If I had my druthers, we wouldn’t have called Halo 4 that. We really look at that game as the start of where [Master Chief]‘s going. At some point we need to drop the number and still [let you] know you’ve got a big story coming.”

Halo 5: Guardians has both a sequel number and a subtitle, so may represent a transition from one style of title to another. Of course, the series has already produced two numberless spin-offs in the form of Halo: Reach and Halo: ODST.

Ross also reassured fans that the games are not abandoning the iconic Master Chief character, only acknowledging that there are other tales to tell in the Halo universe. “It might still be a Master Chief story,” she explained. “I’m just saying, at some point we don’t want to be Halo 17, when Master Chief’s like 80. We’re not Final Fantasy, we can’t do it. So we kind of open that door – it doesn’t mean it’ll be a Master Chief story or not. That’s something for us to decide in the future.”

Halo 5: Guardians is out in 2015. You'll be able to experience it earlier with Halo: The Master Chief Collection, a Xbox One compilation containing shiny current gen remakes of Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4. It's due on 14 November, and offers access to the Halo 5 beta trial which begins just after Christmas.
