As always whenever new consoles are on the horizon, gamers' thoughts turn to their favourite franchises, and when we might see them in shiny new forms. That's why Phil Spencer of Microsoft Studios found himself on the IGN podcast, discussing the possibility of next generation sequels for Xbox hits such as Gears of War and Project Gotham Racing. The short answer: both might come back, but not yet.

"I want to find a great Gears game," Spencer said, but he admitted that the ball is in developer Epic's court. "I really think we'd need to take a step back with Epic and think about... I don't want to call it a reboot because I think it's an overused term but think about where that franchise goes and how to expand what it was. I'd love to have that conversation. I do talk to the Epic guys often. They're also busy right now. I think they've said Gears is kind of on the back burner for them. So I think it would be a situation when the opportunity came up at the right time it'd be great to sit down with them."

But what of Project Gotham Racing, the seminal racing game that helped to launch both the original Xbox and the Xbox 360? There's not been a new entry since 2007, and UK developer Bizarre Creations has now closed down. Could PGR stage a comeback?

"Maybe," is Spencer's considered response, but it seems with two Forza franchises on the go, another racing series would be too much. "It had a great feel. It was there at launch, which I think was important, for both the original Xbox and Xbox 360. I know there is a lot of love for that franchise out there, and it would be interesting to think about what we could do. I don’t think we would ever have three console racing franchises. That seems like a lot for a first-party, with Forza Horizon and Forza Motorsport."

What do you think? Should Microsoft make more of an effort to keep its classic series going, or are they right to wait?
