Fuse lights up in May

Insomniac Games, the developer best known for the SONY-exclusive Ratchet & Clank and Resistance games, has set a date for the launch of its first multi-platform release, Fuse. The co-operative four player shooter will hit UK shops on May 31st.

You - and up to three friends - will control a quartet of elite agents, tasked with defending the Earth from an alien menace. So far, so unoriginal, but Insomniac's passion for inventive weaponry should make all the difference. Every team member has their own "xenotech" weapon which uses alien elements to create outrageous and explosive effects.

Rugged commando Dalton Brooks has a gun that can fire shields onto the battlefield. Thief Izzy Sinclair has a cloaking device and a singularity gun that shoots miniature black holes. Jacob Kimble packs a liquid mercury super-heated sniper rifle while Naya Deveraux carries a "shattergun" that freezes enemies solid. The fun comes in co-op when you start combining these different effects: freezing, crushing and melting your way through the levels. Every weapon also gains new powers and abilities as you level up.

You won't have to worry about missing out on the fun if you play solo either, as the LEAP system will allow single players to hop from one character to another during play.

Fuse is due for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on May 31st.
