Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker HD on Wii U at GAME

This week has been one which might've left Wii U owners feeling, well, left out, with a certain big game hitting the "other two" consoles.

But fret not - because the classic Zelda game The Wind Waker is sailing back into port and on to the Wii U in an exclusive HD remake. And because it debuted on the GameCube back in 2003 (a decade is a lifetime in gaming), many of us won't have had the privilege of playing what some argue is the definitive Zelda game.

Like the GTA series, players are charged with exploring one of gaming's richest open worlds but in Zelda's universe, the focus is not on carjacking, maiming or pulling people's teeth out but setting sail across the Great Sea to explore its islands and uncover its many secrets. On a mission to save his kidnapped sister, Link must hop aboard his boat (now with speeded-up sailing times; a major improvement over the original's laborious ocean-going dynamic) and head out across the waves to face richly-imagined challenges and bosses.

Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker HD on Wii U at GAME

Like any self-respecting open-world, Wind Waker is also packed with hidden surprises - from mini-games and combat arenas to riddles, there's much to discover that will bewitch and delight as you traverse the game's beautiful world. And talking of graphics, its graphics are now running at a sumptuous 1080p; it's worth remembering that there was an outcry when Wind Waker's cel-shaded graphics were first revealed back in the day with many fans bitterly complaining that the look was a step backwards and childish-looking. But fast forward a decade, and the styling has stood the test of time; its cel-shaded look standing out even more in a genre that has become obsessed with realism.

Other Wii U upgrades worthy of note include the 'Tingle Bottle' that allows you to post messages that will wash up on the shores of other people's Zelda adventures and the ability to play the game on your GamePad if someone is hogging the telly. It all adds up to a title that offers an experience every bit as intoxicating as the Grand Theft Autos of this world. And while GTA V might be a thing of joyous hedonism (and cynicism), Wind Waker is quite simply a thing of joy. So instead of feeling left out, Wii U owners should be feeling pretty smug come October 4th. And deservedly so.
