Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition Preview

Blizzard is known for creating some of the most incredible gaming experiences this generation. The company has been extremely successful with its World of Warcraft MMORPG, but the Diablo series is one that holds a special place in most gamers’ hearts, due to its fast-paced action, gripping story and many hours spent dungeon crawling for epic loot.

Diablo III was the first title in the series’ history to make its way to consoles when it released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last September. The game performed better than expected, which makes the upcoming release of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 highly anticipated.

Plenty of evil to spare

Diablo fans are in for a treat when Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition debuts in August, as it will include the full Diablo III experience, allowing gamers to play as one of six available character classes and save the world of Sanctuary from unspeakable evils, but they’ll also partake in the latest expansion pack: Reaper of Souls.

The new expansion pack for Diablo III adds several features to the overall experience, one of which is a new character class known as the Crusader. The Crusader serves as a tank and uses a variety of specialised shields, harnesses holy magic and swings rather large weapons.

A new character class pales in comparison to the all-new adventure mode. This mode allows players to roam freely through Sanctuary to hack and slash anything that comes their way, although hunting down bounties and adventuring through Nephalem Rifts, which serve as Reaper of Souls’ new dungeon levels, are two of the main reasons players will enjoy this mode.

Bounties may involve up to five random objectives per act, centered on such tasks as hunting specific enemies, clearing areas within Sanctuary, killing a number of monsters or completing a particular task. Nephalem Rifts, meanwhile, are completely randomised dungeons that allow players to fight through enemies and explore areas collected from all acts. In order to partake in a Nephalem Rift, players will need to retrieve five Rift Keystone Fragments obtained by completing bounties or opening Horadric Caches.

Diablo III on console has its benefits

Blizzard put a lot of effort into this upcoming version of Diablo III, as PlayStation 4 players will be able to enjoy the title running at a smooth 60fps in 1080p, while Xbox One owners can still enjoy 60fps in a very close 900p resolution. Best of all, those who played last year’s Diablo III can transfer their characters into the Ultimate Evil Edition, although it will only be possible within a particular console family (i.e. Xbox 360 transfers to Xbox One, PlayStation 3 transfers to PlayStation 4).

In addition, the PlayStation versions will offer a few more exclusives. Players will be able to explore a dungeon based on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us that includes several enemies from the game, including Clickers and Bloaters. In addition to the exclusive dungeon, the Guise of the Colossi, based on Shadow of the Colossus, can be unlocked through transmogrification plans that give your armour the look of one of the colossi that players battle in the celebrated PS2 classic.

Multiplayer will also be possible, with up to four players making their way through Sanctuary both locally or online. This is the first time Diablo III will include a local co-op feature, making those who have a rather large couch and friends thirsting for adventuring very happy. On top of that, the PlayStation 4 will have an exclusive feature that allows for loot gifting. When players receive a Legendary loot drop, they’ll score an additional item that can be gifted to a friend through the title’s in-game mailing system.

Become Sanctuary’s saviour once more

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition will be available on August 19, which is right on the edge of the tidal wave of video game releases we’re expecting this fall. Releasing just prior to the busy video game season means players will take their time saving Sanctuary and collecting the most epic loot possible. Just be sure to show off what you’ve acquired during your travels in Diablo III to your soon-to-be jealous friends.
